Tammy Smith has designed at least part of every Journal newspaper since she started working with the Community Journals in August 2000. She also designs Prudential C. Dan Joyner's Big Blue Book of Dreams. A Greenville native, she attended the University of Georgia, Greenville Technical College and University of South Carolina Upstate (then Spartanburg) before receiving a bachelor’s degree in communication studies with a concentration in public relations from the University of North Carolina Charlotte in 1999. While in school in Charlotte, Smith took a part-time job with a trade association, the Independent Cash Register Dealers Association, where she was secretary to the editor of its monthly magazine. She learned the basics of design on the job and eventually took on more editing responsibilities. At the Journal, her responsibility is making the pages look as good as possible. She worked on the newspaper’s recent redesign, the first cover-to-cover redesign since the paper was founded in May 1999 and has been a key member of the team that planned Watchdog.com. Smith doesn’t consider herself particularly creative, but she is a perfectionist, which helps make the Journal newspapers easy to navigate and read.
