Jennifer Pond regularly drives along Dowdy Ferry Road, an area she knows well because of its reputation for animal dumping. Pond is not only a teacher but also the founder of Pond of Love, a nonprofit animal rescue.
Over the years, she has found many abandoned animals in the same area, so she has learned to pay close attention whenever something seems unusual.
On this particular morning, she noticed an upended crate near the road. At first, she continued driving, but something about the scene stayed in her mind.
A Feeling She Could Not Ignore
Pond later said she knew she would spend the entire day worrying if she did not turn around. Trusting her instinct, she drove back, pulled over and walked toward the crate.
