Owner Adopts Golden Retriever Puppy, Then Spots Something Unusual About His Ears

A new dog owner recently turned to Reddit after noticing something unusual about their young puppy: his ears appeared much smaller than expected.

The owner had been told the puppy was a 3-month-old golden retriever, but after looking more closely, they began wondering whether he might actually be mixed with another breed.

Reddit Post Raises Questions About Puppy’s Breed

Reddit user cristauz shared a photo of the puppy in a post that had received around 1,500 upvotes at the time of writing. In the post, the owner explained that they had recently brought home what they believed was a golden retriever puppy.

However, one detail made them uncertain.

The owner wrote that they had noticed the puppy’s ears were quite small and asked other Reddit users whether that was normal for a golden retriever or whether it could suggest the dog was mixed with another breed.

Puppy Was Presumably Adopted, Not Purchased

In the comments, the owner clarified that the puppy was not bought. Based on that statement, it appears the dog was most likely adopted.

Because adopted puppies often come with limited background information, it is not unusual for owners to question a dog’s breed once certain physical traits begin to stand out.

Why Identifying Puppy Breeds Can Be Difficult

According to the Animal Humane Society, determining a dog’s breed is often an educated guess, especially when the dog is still a puppy.

When a breed is not already confirmed, veterinary teams usually look at physical features such as body weight, paw size, ear shape, head structure, and coat texture to make the best possible estimate.

With more than 200 dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club and many shelter dogs being mixed breeds, accurately identifying a puppy’s background can be challenging.

Puppy Features Can Change Over Time

A puppy’s appearance at 3 months old may not fully reflect how the dog will look as an adult. The Animal Humane Society explains that certain traits, including coat length, coat texture, and even eye color, can change as dogs grow.

Because of this, a feature that seems important during puppyhood may look completely different later. Small ears at a young age may not give a full answer about the dog’s breed.

Reddit Users Share Their Opinions

Many Reddit commenters quickly suggested that the puppy might not be a purebred golden retriever.

One user said the dog did not appear to be a purebred golden retriever, while still calling him a cute puppy. Another commenter guessed that he might have border collie in his background, noting that border collies are known for having an average lifespan of around 16 years.

Other users also supported the idea that the puppy could be a mix rather than a full golden retriever.

Mixed-Breed Dogs and Lifespan

Some commenters reassured the owner by pointing out that mixed-breed dogs often live longer than purebred dogs.

A 2019 study from the American Animal Hospital Association found that mixed-breed dogs generally tend to have longer lifespans than purebred dogs.

The same study also found that spayed or neutered dogs had a lower risk of death compared with dogs that remained sexually intact, regardless of sex. For dogs older than 2 years, regular dental cleanings were also connected with longer lifespans. The risk of death decreased as the frequency of dental scaling increased.

What the Owner Can Do Next

While Reddit users can offer guesses, the most reliable way to understand a dog’s breed background is through a DNA test or a professional veterinary assessment. Still, even without knowing the exact breed mix, the puppy’s health, personality, and care needs are more important than whether he is a purebred golden retriever.

The Reddit post about a 3-month-old puppy with unusually small ears sparked a wider discussion about how difficult it can be to identify a puppy’s breed. Although the owner was told the dog was a golden retriever, many commenters believed he might be mixed with another breed, possibly even border collie.

Since puppy features often change with age, the dog’s appearance may continue to develop over time. Whether purebred or mixed, the puppy remains loved, and his possible mixed background may even come with long-term health and lifespan benefits.
