At KC Pet Project, shelter dogs are given a chance to socialize through playgroups, helping them build confidence, reduce stress, and make friends while waiting for adoption. For one shelter pup named Drake, that playgroup became much more than simple exercise.
When staff introduced Drake to different dogs, he got along with many of them. But everything changed when he met Georgia, a sweet white-and-tan boxer mix.

After about 30 minutes, they finally spotted him. But Drake was still nervous and refused to come near the people searching for him.
Then he saw Georgia.
Georgia Changes Everything
The moment Drake noticed his best friend, his fear seemed to fade. Instead of running away, he turned around and rushed straight toward Georgia. He wiggled with excitement and tried to lick her face.
While Drake was happily greeting Georgia, the staff safely secured him so he could not run again. It was the breakthrough everyone had been hoping for.
Georgia had done what no human could do in that moment. She made Drake feel safe enough to come back.
A Friendship That Helped Them Heal
After the rescue, staff returned both dogs to the shelter and placed them together in the same kennel for the night. Georgia quickly settled down to sleep, but Drake was still anxious and paced around.
