When Ohio resident Brett Dugas and his girlfriend, Guste, noticed their two German shepherds acting strangely around an old locked shed, they first assumed the dogs had picked up the scent of a groundhog.
The shed had been closed for years and was mostly filled with old tools. It was also a familiar hiding place for neighborhood wildlife, so the couple did not think much of the dogs’ behavior at first.
But Mya and Livia, the two German shepherds, would not let the matter go. They kept returning to the shed, sniffing around the door and showing clear signs that something inside had caught their attention.
The Dogs Would Not Stop Sniffing
After a few days, the dogs became even more focused on the shed. They stood near the door, sniffed intensely, and one of them even began digging near the ground.
That was when Dugas realized this might not be an ordinary animal scent. The dogs were too excited and too persistent to ignore.
Trying to understand what they had found, he walked around the shed and looked through one of the dirty old windows. What he saw immediately changed the situation.
Inside the locked shed was a tiny gray kitten, sitting alone with his eyes closed and crying.
A Rescue Begins
Dugas had no idea how long the kitten had been trapped inside. Seeing the little cat in distress, he knew he had to act quickly.
Because the shed was locked, he asked a neighbor to bring bolt cutters so they could get inside. Once the door was opened, Dugas reached the kitten and noticed that the baby’s eyes appeared badly infected.
He knew the kitten needed medical care right away, but before leaving, he checked the shed again to make sure there were no others hiding inside.
That is when he found a second kitten, the first kitten’s brother, tucked away in a corner.
Kittens Get The Help They Need
After rescuing both kittens, Dugas contacted Lucky Paws Rescue. The rescue team was able to take the tiny cats in and begin treatment immediately.
Both kittens had eye infections, but with medicine and proper care, they quickly began improving. Within about 10 days, they were already doing much better.
Dugas named the kittens BARNey and SHEDeur, a playful tribute to the place where they were discovered.
Once they are old enough and healthy enough, the kittens are expected to be neutered and made available for adoption.
German Shepherds Become Unexpected Heroes
Whether Mya and Livia were curious, concerned, or simply following their noses, their persistence helped save the kittens’ lives.
If the German shepherds had not kept returning to the locked shed, the tiny cats may have remained trapped and unnoticed for much longer.
Their sharp senses and determined behavior gave BARNey and SHEDeur a second chance.
