Thirteenth Solicitor Bob Ariail announced Monday he will not seek re-election.

Ariail, who has been solicitor since 1997, has come under fire for his handling of the John Ludwig case, most recently for accepting a guilty plea for reckless homicide without getting a guarantee the former businessman would serve prison time.

Ludwig, who drove his Maserati through a Greenville County house, killing the homeowner as he watched television, was sentenced to three years probation and 500 hours community service.

Ariail said the Ludwig case had nothing to do with his decision.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my work with law enforcement and members of our judicial system in serving the people of Greenville and Pickens counties,” Ariail said in a short press release. “The Solicitor’s Office has accomplished much in the past 12 years. The credit goes to the office staff for making these achievements, and I am proud of their dedication to the work we do.”

Ariail, who would not make further comments, told his staff during an afternoon meeting.

He said he may join his son, Mills Ariail, in his law practice after his term ends in January 2011. At the end of his term, Ariail will be the longest serving 13th Circuit Solicitor.
