Bells will be ringing downtown

During its meeting Monday night, the Greenville City Council gave initial approval to construction of a carillon at RiverPlace in the traffic circle outside of the Hampton Inn.

In a revised development agreement with developer Phil Hughes, the city agreed to use up to $250,000 in central business district tax increment money to pay for the carillon.

According to the agreement, RiverPlace has become a significant destination in the city and the carillon will “enhance the visitor and resident experience.”

The bells used in the carillon will come from Italy.

The new agreement also calls for the city to complete improvements in the terrace area behind the Bounce building. The work includes a rock wall, stairway and railings. The city agreed to pay $186,250 for the project.
