His family’s company, Ice Rink Engineering and Manufacturing, has built rinks for the Regis and Kelly Show’s Christmas show, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and a Lifetime Movie Channel movie shot in Nova Scotia.
For eight years, he’s wanted to bring a Rockefeller Center type outdoor rink to Greenville’s Main Street.
It will happen this year.
UBS Ice on Main will open on Nov. 25 on Village Green at the Main@Broad development in downtown Greenville and run through Jan. 8.
The ice rink will comprise the green space in front of the Courtyard at Marriott and will use custom fabricated equipment specifically designed to cool the rink even in a South Carolina winter.
Durham said because of the possibility of spring-like temperatures in Greenville, the rink will require enough equipment to freeze a National Hockey League-sized rink.
“If this was in Minnesota, we’d need one-third of the equipment,” he said.
Greenville Parks and Recreation Director Dana Souza said the city is working to increase the number of winter activities downtown.
“Except for the Poinsettia Parade and the Christmas tree lighting, the winter months have been void of any events,” he said.
Mayor Knox White said he expects Ice on Main to become a downtown tradition.
The rink will be open for public skating for $10 per person. Skates will be available for rent.
In addition, Durham said he plans to hold ice shows at the rink throughout the holidays, including possibly a New Year’s Eve show and Mice on Ice on Main.
A schedule will be posted at the beginning of the season at www.iceonmain.net.
Durham said the Village Green is the perfect spot for the rink.
The sidewalk at City Hall will give spectators a perfect overhead view of the rink, he said.
“Our site could not be better, more appropriate or more natural for this event,” he said. “We will make Rockefeller Center and New York jealous.”
