Another company is planning to join the growing Clemson University automotive research park in Greenville.

Sage Automotive Interiors, which creates the cloth for vehicle seats and door panels, announced Wednesday morning it was moving 100 employees and its corporate headquarters to the campus in June 2011 from Spartanburg.

The company is moving because its leadership wants to be part of the automotive research cluster forming in Greenville around the 250-acer CU-ICAR campus, said Sidney Locke, Sage’s business manager.

Company officials believe they can be part of the research growth happening at the campus.

“It was a no-brainer,” he said.

Sage is moving into a building that will start construction in April and will be part of the campus’s first technology neighborhood. Locke said the company will use about 20,000 square feet in the building, which is about one-third of the structure.

The building’s grant is being paid for in part through a $3 million government grant.

The company was formerly Milliken Automotive and went private in September. It has plants in Greenville, Spartanburg, Abbeville and Georgia.

The Sage announcement comes just a few weeks after Proterra Inc., announced it was bringing 1,300 jobs as part of a research and manufacturing presence on the campus.

Proterra makes hybrid buses. Other companies on the campus include BMW, Intec, Ozen and Koyo Bearings.
