A homeowner was shocked after discovering that what she believed was one coyote living under her shed was actually an entire coyote family.
Hidden beneath the structure were a mother coyote and eight tiny pups, creating an urgent situation that required expert help.
The discovery became even more concerning because the den was located close to a children’s play area.
While coyotes usually avoid human contact, wildlife experts knew that a nursing mother could become protective if she felt her babies were in danger.
Homeowner Calls Wildlife Experts for Help
After realizing there was wildlife living under the shed, the homeowner contacted D&K Pest Control and Wildlife Removal, a humane wildlife removal company. Experts David Teitsort and Kyle Kilgore quickly arrived at the home to assess the situation.
When they looked under the shed, they found the mother coyote sheltering with her eight pups. The pups were extremely young and still dependent on their mother.
Because of their age, rescuers knew the family had to be handled carefully and kept together throughout the rescue.
Why the Rescue Was Urgent
The biggest concern was the location of the den. It was close to the family’s children’s playground, which created a potential safety risk for both the people living there and the animals.
Coyotes are generally shy and prefer to stay away from humans. However, a mother caring for newborn pups may act defensively if she senses danger nearby. Wildlife experts understood that the safest solution was not to harm the animals, but to relocate them humanely.
The team needed to complete the rescue in one visit so the pups would not be separated from their mother.
Humane Rescue Plan Begins
To safely remove the coyotes, the wildlife team set up fencing around the shed. They then built a humane live trap to capture the mother coyote without injuring her.
At first, the mother was cautious and avoided the trap. This behavior was expected because she was protecting her babies. She moved back and forth under the shed while rescuers worked carefully around the area.
Once the mother was safely secured, the team removed floorboards from the shed to reach the pups. Each baby coyote was gently taken out by hand.
Eight Tiny Pups Safely Removed
The pups were very young, barely old enough to have their eyes open. Because of this, they stayed mostly quiet and did not move much during the rescue.
The team handled each pup with care, making sure they were safe and reunited with their mother as quickly as possible. Keeping the family together was one of the most important parts of the operation.
After the entire coyote family was secured, rescuers began looking for a wildlife rehabilitation center that could care for them properly.
Wildlife Centers Step In
The team first contacted Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Wildlife, also known as KARE. However, KARE was already handling another coyote case at the time.
KARE then referred the rescuers to Oaken Acres Wildlife Center, which agreed to take in the mother and her eight pups.
Today, the coyote family is safe at the wildlife center. They are living in an isolated, natural environment where the pups can grow without danger from humans or neighborhood activity.
Coyotes Will Return to the Wild
The goal is not to keep the coyotes permanently in captivity. Once the pups are around 4 to 5 months old, they are expected to receive vaccinations and eventually return to the wild with their mother.
This gives the young coyotes a better chance of survival while also protecting the family who discovered them under the shed.
