Gilbert Kemboi grew up in the Rift Valley of Kenya racing the sunset home from elementary school.

It was a long way from his school to the safety of home and he’s a long way from there today.

How Mike Young has helped the Terriers play their way to the top

When Mike Young came to Spartanburg in the spring of 1989, it was to little fanfare and uncertain expectations.

He’d been hired as an assistant basketball coach at Wofford College, a job that paid a barely-enough-to-live-on wage and involved unglamorous behind-the-scenes work.

Wofford was an NCAA Division II program at the time and coached by Richard Johnson. Its players were talented, the games were exciting, and the Terriers won their share. They bested larger, Division I programs now and then.  Continue reading...

They’re skateboarding here, and everywhere

Clay Kreiner was on a skateboard by the time he was 7.

“Somebody told us about a park where we could take our rollerblades,” he said. “I saw the skateboarders and got my first skateboard two weeks later.  I haven’t stopped since.” Now 14, Kreiner recently competed in the X Games and   of the 2009 Gatorade Free Flow Tour.

He plans on going pro one day and traveling the world skating, following in the footsteps of skating legend, Tony Hawk, who by the age of 16, was the best vertical skater in the world.  Continue reading...

Honoring service men and women from the United States and Scotland seems like a perfect fit to the organizers of the Greenville Scottish Games.

“We should have thought of it sooner,” said Dee Benedict, president of Greenville Scottish Games.

Lax tourney headed here

Event could generate $4-5 million

An estimated 4,000 Men’s Lacrosse or Lax athletes and fans will descend on Greenville next May for the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) National Championships.

In fact the organization has selected Greenville for both the 2012 and 2013 National Championships.

“Based on our projected attendance and hotel rooms this event could generate up to $1.9 million in economic impact,” said Todd Bertka of Greenville Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Continue reading...
