The other Greenville

Never heard of the Greenline-Spartanburg community? That’s their problem.

Neighborhood activists are outraged it took the city of Greenville 465 days to finish work on the Spartanburg Street bridge where a young woman died in November of 2008 after her car plunged into Richland Creek.

Shedreaka Davis was injured on Nov. 12, 2008, and died five days later. The city’s slow response is seen as typical of the indifference toward the Greenline – Spartanburg area by some in the community.

City Manager Jim Bourey said city crews addressed safety issues with the bridge within days of the accident and that the final refurbishment of the structure took longer than it should have because the city wanted to do the job right.  Continue reading...

Let the revitalization begin

Overbrook neighborhood is moving forward

Narrow tree-lined streets and clusters of similar homes characterize Overbrook. The neighborhood, Greenville’s oldest suburb before city lines took it in, is off of East North Street and minutes from downtown.

Children play in their yards and a group of youngsters shoot baskets in the street since the basketball goal is on the edge of the road. That explains the speed bumps and 15 mph speed limit. A quaint home is surrounded by a white picket fence and hanging baskets on the porch. Several homeowners walk their dogs while a puppy barks from its backyard fence.

Gina Calvin, in the past 23 years, has lived in two different homes just blocks apart in Overbrook. She and her husband have bought and renovated many more. She said, “I saw the neighborhood’s potential and wanted to see it completely revitalized.”  Continue reading...

Near the Milliken mill in Greenville’s Judson community stands a brick church where Rev. Windell Rogers recently held a Pray for Judson event. Visitors and members could come and pray for the restoration of community identity, freedom from poverty and abundance.

Rogers has a vision for restoring the sense of community to this neighborhood that was once a vibrant mill village. With Greater Mt. Calvary Baptist Church as a neighborhood resource and his home base, Rogers wants to help spark interest in Judson as an affordable and beautiful place to live.

“It’s only two miles from Falls Park. This is one of the few places close to downtown that you can still find a decent structure with yard space,” he said.  Continue reading...
