The Upstate’s largest sewer treatment authority is entering the design phase of a $2.6 million project to generate electricity using methane gas, said Ray Orvin, executive director of Renewable Water Resources.
Part of the cost for the authority’s project will be offset by a $500,000 grant from the state Energy Office. Continue reading...

It was a tough hit for this suburban city, even though officials here said it had more to do with the fact the U.S.’s largest freestanding movie rental retailer is under assault nationwide by Netflix, rental kiosks, online and cable television video offerings than it did with the local economy. Every day, Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research and the neighboring Millennium Campus at the edge of Mauldin’s city limits are bringing new business and an increased potential for generating new revenue for the municipality.
And while the city has weathered its share of store closings during the past year, leaders here say residential building construction is beginning to make a resurgence. The Mauldin High Marching Band beat 19 other high school bands to win the grand champion trophy at the Sugar Bowl Marching Band Competition this week.
Mauldin band director Adam Scheuch said the competition is the biggest marching band competition ever won by the school. Continue reading...
