U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham came back to Greenville today and urged Democrats in Washington to “stop and start over” on healthcare reform.

The Senate plan under consideration would expand Medicaid benefits to millions of Americans by raising the income level to qualify while introducing cost savings that the bill’s advocates say would allow about $480 billion in cuts to Medicare.  Continue reading...

Proterra announcement expected Thursday

About 300 jobs – a quarter of the five-year rollout totals – could be coming to Greenville later this year as part of an expansion by an Colorado-based company that makes zero emission parts for buses and trucks.

Proterra LLC is expected to announce Thursday the creation of a manufacturing facility at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research that will make products such as hybrid and battery-electric buses that are on average 10,000 pounds lighter than traditional buses, sources told the Journal.

The company will employ 1,300 once it is up and running within five years. It will be housed in a building which will start construction later this year.  Continue reading...

Bus builder confirms major investment here

Colorado bus maker Proterra Thursday officially announced they plan to build a state of the art research and manufacturing facility at the Clemson University ICAR campus, an investment of $68 million that should create 1,300 jobs over the next seven years.

Proterra plans to lease 25 acres at CUICAR and build a 240,000-square-foot building with the potential to expand to 50 acres. Construction is slated to begin in the spring.  Continue reading...

Company will build headquarters at research center

Another company is planning to join the growing Clemson University automotive research park in Greenville.

Sage Automotive Interiors, which creates the cloth for vehicle seats and door panels, announced Wednesday morning it was moving 100 employees and its corporate headquarters to the campus in June 2011 from Spartanburg.  Continue reading...

CU-ICAR helps Upstate company pull off project, before deadline

When Sealevel Systems needed to run critical tests on a computer docking station for the military, the company turned to a lab at Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research.

The Liberty company was in a bind.  It had to pass inspection by Jan. 20 to meet a production schedule, but the Upstate’s worst snow and ice storm in years was in the way.  CU-ICAR was closed.

“They opened for us and said come and go as you please,” said Ben O’Hanlan, chief operating officer.  “Not only did ICAR come to our rescue, they came to our rescue when nobody was getting out of the house.”  Continue reading...
