It’s arguably the most important section of Interstate 85 in South Carolina.

I-85, I-385: construction zone

Public input is sought on interchange fix

Interstate 85 and Interstate 385 in and around Greenville will essentially be a construction zone for the next five or six years.

South Carolina Department of Transportation officials are accepting public comment on two options still under consideration for the biggest portion of it – a $235- million rebuilding of the I-85 and I-385 interchange.

"Diverging diamond" formation being considered to alleviate congestion

One of the solutions being studied by the South Carolina Department of Transportation to ease congestion along a 22-mile stretch of Interstate 85 in Spartanburg and Greenville counties is being used at five sites in the country.

Diverging diamonds temporarily put drivers on the left side of the road at interchanges to eliminate the need for drivers to make left turns in front of oncoming traffic.

A plan to ease congestion along a 22-mile stretch of Interstate 85 in Spartanburg and Greenville counties should be finished by April.

Columbia-based Civil Engineering Consulting Services has been studying options to alleviate congestion from White Horse Road in Greenville County to State 129 in Spartanburg County.
