Local business leaders envision 2011 recovery

The industrial market continues to show signs of strength

FEBRUARY 2, 2010 11:15 a.m. Comments (0)

The next few months will be relatively stagnant for the Upstate real estate market as many business leaders believe 2011 – not 2010 – will bring a recovery from the latest global economic depression.

Even as news of two quarters of gross national product growth, which signals an official end to the U.S. recession, came to light Tuesday morning, the meeting of 300 area business leaders was subdued at the CBRE Furman Co. annual economic forecast.  Continue reading...

His last day was June 30, and he’d already bidden farewell to the institution he’d called home for 16 years. He spoke that day from a house in Brevard, N.C. – perched on a ridge over the village and college.  Continue reading...

Don’t expect it to be the case for long, but South Carolina is posting the lowest gasoline prices per gallon in the U.S.

That’s even with the fact the numbers this week have already started to climb.

Locally, the price per gallon rose nine-tenths of a cent in the past week, while the national average fell two tenths of a cent.  Continue reading...

Many of the talking points in the current immigration debate are patently untrue, said a panel of experts on immigration issues during a presentation at Furman University Tuesday night.

One current hot-button item, anchor babies, and proposals to change the U.S. Constitution to remove the clause relating to automatic citizenship for anyone born in this country is a case in point, said Amy Shelley a panelist and an immigration attorney who practices in Greenville.  Continue reading...

OCTOBER 22, 2010 6:07 a.m. Comments (0)

Henry Gibson has never gotten the chance to sit in the audience during a Greenville Chorale concert.

That’s because he has been performing with the Chorale since its inaugural season in 1961.

Gibson had graduated from North Greenville Junior College and transferred to Furman University. Shortly after the fall term had begun, one of Gibson’s professors told him he should join what started as the Rotary Civic Chorale.  Continue reading...

Seniors regroup

A tough housing market brings change to assisted living centers

SEPTEMBER 1, 2011 1:44 p.m. Comments (0)

With seniors watching their nest-egg housing values erode and often unable to sell their homes even at depressed prices, many are delaying moving into continuing care retirement communities.

The independent-living component of that business was built on the premise that seniors would use cash from the sale of an appreciating home to buy into a lifestyle of independence with a promise of a continuum of health care for life.             [Continued on page 28]

That model got turned on its head by the Great Recession, the snails-pace recovery of the housing market, even more deterioration of housing values and, indeed, by the prospect that a home will never again be worth what it once was.  Continue reading...

Furman grad worked 9/11 mortuary

Dr. Eric Berg worked at Dover Airt Force Base Port Mortuary after the attacks

SEPTEMBER 8, 2011 11:17 a.m. Comments (0)

It was the tables that disturbed Dr. Eric Berg the most.

Several card tables in a room about the size of half a tennis court covered in the common stuff that makes up everyday life. Driver’s licenses, toys, passports, cell phones, wedding rings. Watches. The kind with hands and wind-up stems. All stopped at 9:37 a.m., the time American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon.

“That was spooky,” Berg said.  Continue reading...
