The CO2- laden liquid would be injected into saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas fields. Brine, which is heavier than fresh water, becomes even heavier when CO2 is added.  Continue reading...

The nature of things

She's a botanist at heart

FEBRUARY 21, 2011 8:01 a.m. Comments (0)

Karen Hall’s path to becoming an ethno-botanist was as twisty as a Smoky Mountain trail.

The 50-year-old professor at Clemson University is a fourth generation native plant enthusiast from Bryson City, N.C., and the first professional botanist in her family.

Hall’s voice still carries hickory-flavored hints of her formative years in the lee of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She was born in California and lived in Texas until she was four when her father retired from the Air Force and returned to her grandparents’ homestead outside of Bryson City.  Continue reading...

Southwest arrives

A plane pull, pep band and a mascot, they’ll all help welcome the airline during weekend celebration

MARCH 10, 2011 1:33 p.m. Comments (0)

Southwest Airlines and Upstate community and business leaders will be doing a lot of celebrating this weekend to commemorate the historic arrival of the low-cost carrier to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.

The weekend includes private receptions, a plane pull, a progressive dinner in downtown Greenville, a community service project, First Flight certificates and a round of media conferences.

The service project, a signature event of Southwest’s entering a new market, will be tree plantings in Greenville and Spartanburg counties. Perhaps the most sentimental of the events will be the planting of a tree at GSP at the beginning of a Monday media conference in honor of Roger Milliken. Milliken was the only chairman of the airport commission until his death this past December. The tree plantings are symbolic of GSP and Southwest planting new roots together.  Continue reading...

Pay raises at Clemson, USC, have some asking why layoffs, budget shortfalls continue

APRIL 29, 2011 10:25 a.m. Comments (0)

Clemson University and the University of South Carolina handed out more than $4 million in salary supplements last year to their highest-level employees while at the same time raising tuition and cutting staffs, spending documents obtained by the Journal show.

School officials say the salary supplement situation is a reflection of years of state funding cutbacks.

“Two thirds of our senior faculty and staff are being paid at below-market rates,” said Chris Byrd, USC’s vice-president for human resources.  Continue reading...

From tragedy comes good

Clemson University focuses on safety and prevention

In the years since Clemson student Tiffany Souers was murdered university officials and students have focused more on campus safety and resulted in a corresponding reduction of certain crimes.

Vice President for Student Affairs at Clemson, Gail DiSabatino said, “I do believe at the time which one of our students was murdered off-campus there was a heightened awareness of the importance of individual student responsibility to take safety precautions such as locking their doors and not walking alone at night.”

Clemson University Security Captain Eric Hendricks agreed, “The publicity that came from that tragedy made students more aware.”  Continue reading...

Clemson and the arts come together downtown

SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 1:43 p.m. Comments (0)

Artists with ties to Clemson University are making their marks on Greenville, from the iconic “Mice on Main,” nine rodent-sized statues that comprise one of city’s most popular public art projects, to the Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities.

“Over the last 15 years, Greenville has transformed itself in terms of cultural identity,” said Denise Woodward-Detrich, director of Clemson’s Lee Gallery. “And in terms of the city’s art scene, Clemson alumni have made a big contribution.”

An event Friday night at the Wyche Pavilion beside the Reedy River downtown is designed to make Greenville residents aware of those contributions and to raise awareness for the Center for the Visual Arts at Clemson.  Continue reading...

Clemson's record-setting 5-0 season due to staff changes, recruiting and dedication

OCTOBER 7, 2011 10:59 a.m. Comments (0)

Clemson quarterback Tahj Boyd missed but one day of the three-month-long summer workouts when he spent the day at Lake Hartwell with family and friends.

That commitment was one of the many factors that brought Clemson to the 5-0 mark and a record-setting season.

Coach Dabo Swinney told his players before the season began that the program needed changing from the inside out to meet the challenge of what he called “a schedule of champions.”  Continue reading...
