City begins repair on pot hole off Augusta Road

by Charles Sowell

City crews have started work fixing a nasty hole cut in the pavement at the intersection of Cureton Street and Augusta Road because of safety considerations, said Dewayne Cooper, assistant engineer for construction inspection.

Cooper said Duke Energy cut the hole in the pavement as part of an emergency repair to a power pole some weeks ago. Since the work was done on an emergency basis no permit from the city was needed.

Normally, the utility that made a break in the pavement would be responsible for fixing the hole, Cooper said, but city crews were sent to handle the situation after it was determined there were safety issues involved.

In situations where work is done without a permit on a non-emergency basis the city can write a citation for $1,277.50, Cooper said.

More than 72 hours after JournalWatchdog.com started asking questions the hole had been refilled with dirt and gravel and Cooper said workers should have a temporary patch in place using a cold seal asphalt substitute soon.

According to a submission on Watchdog’s Scoop service the hole has been open for several weeks.

Traffic turning right off Augusta onto Cureton is being forced to swerve to avoid the sharp-edged hole. The narrow street opens onto Augusta at two banks and often has backups that are being exacerbated by the break in the pavement.

City residents with issues, or complaints, on construction issues should call Greenville Cares at 232-2273. Issues could range from questions on potholes to trash pick up. These questions are tracked by computer to make sure requests are taken care of in a timely manner, Cooper said.
