Maurice J. Spagnoletti, former president of Carolina First and recently executive vice president at Doral Bank in Puerto Rico, was shot and killed execution style June 15 as he drove his car in rush-hour traffic on a downtown San Juan expressway. He was 57.
Police Commander Orlando Melendez said a preliminary investigation indicated Spagnoletti was trying to evade pursuers and was shot three times in the head when he slowed his Lexus to enter a tunnel of the De Diego Expressway, according to the Latin American Herald Tribune.
According to the Associated Press, investigators were looking into whether the killing was related to an audit Spagnoletti was conducting at the Doral Bank. The bank was quoted by the AP as saying “any speculation about any improper conduct is totally false.”
Before joining Carolina First, Spagnoletti was president of Fifth Third Bank and a regional president of Summit Bank in Pennsylvania.
Funeral services were held Thursday followed by a mass at St. Rose of Lima Church in East Hanover, N.J. He is survived by his wife and children.
