Members of the Greenville Water Commission on Wednesday passed a resolution that may allow the Greenville Water System to pay for a homeowner’s flood damage.

Mike and Mitzi McCall’s house flooded when a water main near their house broke, sending a million gallons of water rushing onto their property.

The flood caused about $35,000 in damages.

But the McCall’s insurance company denied their claim. So did the South Carolina Insurance Reserve Fund, the water system’s insurer.

On Wednesday, members of the water commission set up a fund that could allow the water system to pay for damages insurance companies won’t cover.

The fund has a limitation of $50,000 per event, up to $100,000 for the year, said Deb Sofield, chairwoman of the Greenville Water Commission.

“We want to do what’s right,” Sofield said. “We have every intention of covering their out-of-pocket expense.”

Sofield said the McCall’s neighbor’s homeowner’s insurance covered their damages and the McCall’s insurance company is taking another look at the claim.

“If their insurance company pays, they won’t need us,” Sofield said. “But the Water System is going to do the right thing.”

If a homeowner’s claim is denied by their insurance company, the new policy allows the homeowner to submit a claim to the Water System with documentation on the damages, she said.

“At the end of the day, it is our water line,” she said.

Commissioners will also look at whether it should change insurance companies.
